Usually 'Rubbing Strake' - but that is not a location on a boat, but an item attached the the 'gunwale', which IS the location where the sides meet the deck (or the top of the sides, if you have no deck - like a rowing dinghy).
It is NOT spelt 'gunnel' (although is pronounced like that), nor is it anything to do with whales. A 'wale' - as defined by Websters: "any of a number of strakes usually of extra thick and strong planks in the sides of a wooden ship", and the 'gun' bit is because that's the bit you pointed the guns over to fire at other boats (before they cut holes in the sides lower down). _________________ 'We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty' (HHGG) |
