Do you think inspection is too harsh or not too harsh?
How do think it could change? In what way? |

| Inspection is useful. I think only marks or half marks should be dropped. Jade dropped 0.1 marks on the last day! |

Part of the problem of only having fractions of a mark difference between a 'good' and 'bad' boat for inspection is that it is then hard to integrate other events (races, dressing up, etc.) into a common system with it, because they tend to deal in whole marks, and the difference between first and last squadron will be 3 marks (or maybe more). _________________ 'We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty' (HHGG) |

| I think instead of half marks it should be a whole mark for something wrong in inspection, it would be much more varied in marking and a bigger span in results. Points could also be awarded in other areas, such as, sail training or good deeds noticed by leaders. There could be points for being sailor of the day and being a nominee and points deducted for rollick of the day and likewise for being a nominee. |

How about giving extra points for being really tidy or nice to the inspector |

I like inspection, now I can go off to skippers' meeting and leave somebody else to tidy the boat, then come back and inspect somebody
The inflation of imspection scores really only means that more weight is now given to the races (since, as Jeremy says, they deal in whole marks rather than quarters, so a good race is worth several clean boats), which is how I think it should be. However, I do think we need some sort of consistent standard, maybe 1 mark for a safety error* and 1/2 a mark for something that's just tidiness.
*A bad highwayman's hitch, gas left on, etc. An open mast gate should lose you more; I'd have taken a whole mark off if I'd found one of those this year. _________________ How can we see God face to face till we have faces? |

I'd agree with you completely Greg - while inspection is good to encourage competition for the best boats, I still don't think it should be nearly as important as the sailing performance on the cruise. We do need some standardisation of marks - I heard about ⅛ marks during the cruise, and apparently someone even got a 0.1 mark knocked off for something! _________________ Why do things at the last minute? That was Jade on the last day. When I saw that, I wished I'd given Javlin 2 9.74 instead of 9 3/4 _________________ How can we see God face to face till we have faces? |

Sailing - races and stuff - is important, but there is a certain 'random' aspect to the various dinghy races, which isn't so fair if they have a high weight in the total scoring.
One possibility would be to mark as at present, but compute the squadron totals based on multiplying by four and subtracting 30. Sounds complicated, but 9 would become 6, 9.25 become 7, and so on. This would integrate better with the marks for the races.
I also agree that safety items should be weighted heavier. I don't care if someone has a match in the bottom of their engine compartment, but I care very much if their gooseneck is wrong - or if their whole Mainsail is twisted through 360 degrees, yet the top of it is threaded in the track. Now, let's see, which Javelin was that . . . _________________ 'We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty' (HHGG) |

How much would you take off for having a lighter on top of the gas bottles? |
