Hi - just to let you know that the Sail Training Weekend is 5th to 7th March 2010. It promises to be a weekend of fun and sailing, and possibly the first chance for some people to see a yacht that we have not had on the Cruise before . . . (the picture on the left is quite small, so you can't see much detail).
If you have any questions about the Training Weekend - fire away! _________________ 'We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty' (HHGG) |

I meant to say - there is a load of stuff all about the Sail Training Weekend on the main Broads Cruise Website http://www.broadscruise.org.uk/.
Just click on the 'Sail Training' reed on the left hand side, then select 'Sail Training Weekend 5th - 7th March 2010 at N.O.T. ' from the Cap'n Jeremy page. _________________ 'We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty' (HHGG) |

I'm trying to set a record for the most posts in a thread by the same person without anyone else replying . . .
(especially a serious thread )
Anyway, there is a brand-new, pretty version of the Sail Training website, just uploaded. It has pictures and everything!

The Sail Training Weekend is popular, and is already over half full.
Don't worry, there is still room for more! _________________ 'We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty' (HHGG) |

Jeremy, I'm going to foil your record attempt. I think it was hopeless anyway, since I recall once banning Mark for setting up a script to post stuff automatically on here, one letter at a time (or something like that).
The sail training weekend's really good and everyone should definitely go on it, but they should take plenty of clothes. _________________ How can we see God face to face till we have faces? |

Indeed, the record to beat is a whopping 754 posts! Although I got a very stern warning and onl just escaped a ban here for it! Good little project though, looking back at the code it could've been done far easier and more reliably... and the best of it all was that the fairy tale was of Greg's choosing
If anyone wants a coding project, I can find you a far more useful one...
As for being an admin, I just used my power very appropriately...we had a new spambot called alenachka from Ukraine come to join us! _________________ Why do things at the last minute? There's still 59 seconds you could wait around! |

| actually, i remember replying inside the Goldilocks topic before it was locked, so there wasn't a continuous line of 754 posts by you in a row, but most of them are you. |

OK, so the lowest number of posts in a row to beat is 375 _________________ Why do things at the last minute? There's still 59 seconds you could wait around! |

Ah, but my point was that all my posts were of a relevant, on-topic nature, moderately serious (as much as you need to be on this Forum) and even about sailing on the Broads.
And the STW is looking to be quite popular this year, we are now three-quarters full, even before the Leaders' Meeting.
Gareth's web site all about it now works for machines running Firefox on Linux as well as standard Windoze with Firefox or that awful, insecure IE thing (I'm not biased, or anything). _________________ 'We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty' (HHGG) |

My posts were very relevant! I was reading all the little children a nice bedtime story about some bears that were going to come and gobble them all up....

Gareth has a website? I'm surprised it didn't work straight off in Firefox/Linux the same as the Windows version... or was the issue getting it to look right in IE?
I'm loving how unpopular IE has become since it turns out it's basically open to infect any computer that visits a malicious website (no matter what they do...and all versions of IE are expoitable) and the way that two governments have recommended everyone stops using it!
(IE8 is an improvement on the others, although still far slower than other browsers at page loading)
Our government, however, are still happily on IE6...oh how safe I feel with them wanting my data! _________________ Why do things at the last minute? There's still 59 seconds you could wait around! |

the government are using IE6?
Gareth's website is the sail training one. the issue was not having microsoft fonts in linux. and the links on the side not appearing in IE |

you can easily install the core Microsoft fonts in Linux - just do 'sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer' if you're using Ubuntu 9.10 (the package name is mstt-corefonts in previous versions I think)
The safest way to avoid browser issues is to use CSS and the font-family selector, rather than specifying an exact font (for example).
For example, rather than doing '<font size="2" face="Verdana"></font>' (actually had to look that up!) I could use the css 'body {font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif;}' (I've applied the font choice to the html <body> tag here, as that'd affect the whole page). That code would tell the browser to use Verdana if available, Arial if not, and if neither were then it'd use the system's default sans-serif font
The idea of CSS is that all the formatting is seperate from the content (can even be stored in a separate file) - that way if you want to redesign the site, you only have to change the CSS file and not rewrite each/every individual file. It also makes it a lot easier for people with screen readers or older browsers (eg blind/old people) as the HTML simply contains the page layout, and makes it very easy for things like screen readers to navigate _________________ Why do things at the last minute? I'm using Dell Ubuntu 8.04 and 'sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts' worked for me.
I've heard of CSS and used it a little bit, it's quite clever and useful |
