There is a report on on of the Norfolk Broads Forums (fora?) that I read which says that the Japonicas have been fitted with diesel engines. This is possible, especially as both remaining Javelins have been converted to diesel, but I am not sure. They cite part of their evidence that one of the boats had a very loud engine earlier in the season - but we know that one of them had an incredibly loud petrol engine last Easter (possibly due to a badly set-up silencer, or timing), and it may have been that which the contributor had mistaken for a newly installed diesel engine.

I only just noticed this! Would that leave le****r/Jenny as the only petrol boats left? Surely if they'd been converted to diesel people would expect the engines to be quieter, or are you saying that if they'd fixed the crazily noisy one it might sound like it had been converted to a diesel?

If they have been fitted with diesels, surely that's a good sign that Martham won't be getting rid of them any time soon?

Yes, it would mean only the two smallest (original) Martham yachts would be left as petrol - as I think all the former Horning yachts (including Zoe, about the same size as Jenny, only nicer) are all diesel.

In fact, many people's perception of diesels is that they are noisy. But that may be compared with a nice smooth 4-cylinder modern petrol enginge, not a single-pot antique Smile

I think I just imagine all boats having diesels as inboard engines and petrols in outboards. Single cylinder diesels are noisy (well, any diesel in idle) but when they're up in the forepeak it means the cockpit is nice and quiet! Nothing is as loud as that Jap engine—they should issue earplugs with the boat if it hasn't been replaced!

Yes, it is very much quieter in the cockpit on a boat with an engine in the forepeak. But it can be hard to remember that for anyone standing on the foredeck (such as when about to step ashore with a mooring line) it can be quite noisy, so you really have to shout a loud command to them - from the nice quiet cockpit.
